From the Rabbi's Desk
Aug 29, 2025
Dear friends,
I’m writing to share the news that I’ve made the decision to step aside as your Rabbi, effective
August 1, 2026, and transition into the role of Rabbi Emeritus of our congregation.
This decision was emotionally painful to make, since 29 years in Rockland County has been a true blessing for me and my family. Just know that Rockland and Congregation Shir Shalom will still be our home. Our roots have grown quite deep here. You are our family. But the timing is right after a long and fulfilling career of over half a century as a Jewish educator and pulpit rabbi.
Yes, I look forward to spending more time with Gerri and my children, but it only means that I will be away a bit longer than what vacations have offered. The next chapters of our lives will continue to include all of you, our adopted family. It is all of you that adopted us so long ago and we will be forever grateful.
I am enormously proud of the holy work that we have accomplished together at Congregation Shir Shalom and must send my deepest thanks to those at the Nanuet Hebrew Center who originally brought my family to Rockland County. Let me also send thanks up to heaven where too many dear congregants now reside. They will forever remain in my heart. I look forward to this upcoming year of partnership as we learn how to transition. I expect to be part of the future of our wonderful congregation even if my role
has changed.
There will be a lot more to share in the days, weeks, and months to come. Thank you for
your support, understanding and love.
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Paul M. Kurland
